CHEECHAKO: /CHēˈCHäkō/ informal A newcomer to Alaska or northwestern Canada; Greenhorn

A mountain discovery and detection tool that helps new cheechakos and seasoned sourdough mountaineers alike identify and learn more about AK mountains using a combination of GPS and ML to match peaks, with information on both map and camera views.

This app is intended for anyone who wants to find out more about Alaska mountains. The main value added is enhanced correction aided with ML AI for improved accuracy in identifying peaks realtime. As the app works offline as long as there is GPS, it is also a tool for remote mountaineering in Alaska.

THE ORIGINAL CHEECHAKS

During the 2020 pandemic, as city nerds who wanted a more connected and grounded lifestyle whilst not compromising on technology, we moved out to Anchorage and never looked back.

This app has been a passion project and wonderful journey, being inspired by the beautiful mountains of Alaska and wanting to improve and utilize our coding and ML skills, while being a full-time engineers and raising a young family.

We sincerely hope we can give back to the community and inspire the next generation to get out there and explore the mountains!

FEATURES

Happy Wanderers

The base app is always free for everyone to use. An internet connection is not necessary.

Map Mode

In Map Mode, mountains are classified according to elevation and volcanicity. Users can discover more facts about them by tapping on the specific mountain.

Camera Mode

In Camera Mode, when the user is physically in Alaska, the overlay displays what mountains are in front of you at your location using ML and ridgeline technologies. GPS, heading, altitude information is also displayed.

Custom ML Models

Custom mountain detection models and correction for improved accuracy in identifying peaks realtime.

Ridgeline API

A viewshed ridgeline is generated based on users location to aid with peak recognition and can be custom calibrated.
